Your so-called upper DVI-D is actually a DVI-I (with the 4 analog pins) which you can use a "DVI-I to VGA" Adapter. I have no idea how or why but that's really the only conclusion I'm drawing.

Some monitors won't accept DVI-I. Sign in to add this video to a playlist. What is the graphics card that you are attempting to use with this monitor? Are you sure that the DVI port you are plugging into is dual link/VGA supported (sorry for the poor terminology)?
